Newborns

When it comes to sleep training a newborn baby, it's important to remember you can’t!

Newborns can not be sleep trained, but can establish healthy sleep habits which will help as they get older. If adapt to healthy sleep habits early your child might not have sleep issues and need sleep training when they are older. Children can fall into bad sleep habits easily which as they get older are much harder to break.

So, the goal of sleep guiding a newborn is to help establish healthy sleep habits and promote longer stretches of sleep for both the baby and the parents.

One common approach to sleep training is the "bedtime routine method." This involves establishing a consistent bedtime routine that signals to the baby that it's time to sleep. This routine can include activities like a warm bath, feeding, gentle rocking, and dimming the lights in the room.

Another is getting them to fall asleep as much as possible lying down in their bassinet so they get used to this and not being held and rocked every time. Young babies adapt very quickly to the feeling of being held to sleep and then associate that feeling with sleep each nap/bedtime. Very cute when they are tiny but not so much as they get older and much harder to break this association.
